HONOLULU – Dominican women's volleyball fell 25-15, 25-22, 25-11 Friday night against No. 24 Chaminade at McCabe Gym.
Senior outside hitter
Kiana Pelton led the Penguins (1-16, 1-7 PacWest) with seven kills on a .385 hitting percentage to go with three blocks, while senior opposite
Mariah Ahid finished with six kills and three blocks. Brooklen Pe'a led the Silverswords (18-4, 8-2 PacWest) with 10 kills and six digs, while Alexia Byrnes finished with 22 assists and three kills.
After trading points to begin the match, Byrnes did a good job distributing the ball to several different hitters while collecting two kills of her own during an 8-1 run that gave Chaminade the 13-5 lead. The Silverswords extended the lead to double-digits on a kill from Greta Cori, but Dominican began to chip away at the lead as Ahid showed some power on the outside on a pair of kills that helped the Penguins cut the deficit to 19-13. Cori ended the Dominican run with a kill and Chaminade held strong to take the 1-0 lead in the match.
Pe'a led the charge for the Silverswords in the second set with three kills during an 8-1 run that gave them the seven-point lead early in the second set. Pelton helped the Penguins push their way back into the set as she sparked a 4-0 run with a kill and ended it combining with freshman middle
Ella Jimenez for a block to make cut the deficit to 13-10. Dominican would close the gap to two on a triple-block by Pelton, Ahid and Jimenez late, but they were unable to get any closer as Chaminade was able to hold on for the lead by trading points down the stretch.
The Silverswords took control of the third set quickly capitalizing on several Penguin errors to build a double-digit lead at 13-3 after a solo block by Lataisia Saulala. Sophomore opposite
Emma Hartvickson and Jimenez combined for a block to give Dominican some momentum and junior setter
Gabi Maiocco served up back-to-back aces to briefly cut the deficit to six. Chaminade scored the next six points to take a match-high lead of 12 and it cruised to the 25-11 victory.
The Penguins will have a quick turnaround as they take on Hawaii Pacific on Saturday at 7 p.m. Hawaiian Time at The Shark Tank to conclude their road trip.
