Penguins unable to fend off Sharks

HONOLULU – Dominican women's volleyball fell 3-0 (27-25, 25-22, 27-25) in a seesaw battle Saturday night with Hawai'i Pacific at The Shark Tank.

Freshman outside hitter Devon Condie had a career night with 12 kills and four blocks, both the best marks of her young career. Senior opposite Mariah Ahid added 10 kills and five digs for the Penguins (1-17, 1-8 PacWest). The Sharks (4-14, 3-7 PacWest) were led by Ella Dotson's 15 kills and 19 digs.

Both teams struggled early in the match as errors gave each team small runs. Karina Gatewood had three consecutive kills to power a 5-1 run that gave HPU a 14-9 advantage. Dominican though battled its way back into the set as Ahid found the court for a pair of kills and Condie had a kill and a block in a 6-1 run that tied the set at 17-17. Demi Winters helped the Sharks retake the lead on a 5-1 run as she found the floor twice on her attacks to make it 22-18. The Penguins though took advantage of a pair of HPU errors and a service ace from junior setter Gabi Maiocco to cut the deficit back to one. Ahid tied the match minutes later as she hit a ball off the block for the kill. The teams began to trade points with Dominican reaching set point once, but the Sharks fended it off and a block by Nicole Ferris and Kirah Boynton-Brown gave them the 27-25 set one victory.

Errors lifted the Sharks into a 6-2 lead in the second set during a 4-point run and HPU slowly added to its lead extending it to eight after Makayla Warthan served up a pair of aces. The Penguins persistence paid off on offense as they chipped away at the lead with a 7-3 run ended on a kill from Condie on an overpass to cut the deficit in half at 16-12. The teams traded points down the stretch of the set with Dominican getting as close as two with the Sharks at set point but it was too late for the comeback as HPU took the 2-0 lead in the match.

The teams traded points for much of the early part of the third set, but the Sharks took control on a 9-1 run capped off by a pair of kills from Dotson to take an 8-point lead. Condie provided the response with three kills in a quick 4-0 run and combined with Kiana Pelton on a block during a subsequent 6-0 run to take the 23-22 advantage. Dotson had the next two kills for the Sharks to get to match point, but the Penguins fought off the end twice before Lauren Christie ended the match with a kill and a block for HPU.

Dominican will return to the court Wednesday to take on Azusa Pacific at 6 p.m. PDT at the Conlan Recreation Center.
