HONOLULU – Dominican women's tennis opened its road trip with a 6-1 victory over Chaminade on Sunday afternoon at Diamond Head Tennis Center.
"The team played well today," head coach
Cristina Visico said. "The winds reached 22 mph which was a challenge, but we pulled it out."
The Penguins (5-3) got off to a strong start in doubles as
Kamar Alajeely and
Taylor Lim swept Tomomi Kohno and Mariel Navarro 6-0.
Michelle Li and
Ofelia Lopez Camarena finished a split second ahead of
Kaitlyn Nguyen and
Haley Garcia for Dominican with each pairing taking a 6-3 decision for the doubles sweep.
Visico shook up her singles lineup to allow some of the younger players on the team to see some action on the court. Li opened singles play with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over the Silverswords' (0-5) Cai Yan Fang and Nguyen put the Penguins a point from clinching after defeating Catrina Liner 6-2, 6-2 on the top court.
Antoinette Schreiber won the first match of her young Dominican career 6-4, 6-0 over Kohro on the fifth court to provide the clinch.
Haley Garcia and Elyssa Shirai played a quick three-set match with Garcia winning the point for the Penguins 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 to keep the momentum rolling. Madison Gianetto was close behind with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Navarro on the sixth court.
Kayleen Lau gave Chaminade its lone point of the night as she held off Lopez Camarena 6-2, 0-6, 7-5 for the victory on court two.
Dominican will return to the court Wednesday as it faces Hawaii Hilo at 10 a.m. HST at Diamond Head Tennis Center.
