HONOLULU – Dominican women's tennis fell 5-2 Wednesday at Diamond Head Tennis Center in a tightly contested match with University of Hawai'i at Hilo.
Anouk van Hoek and Carmelle Joyner opened the match with a 6-0 win in doubles for the Vulcans (3-5) while Sandra Dafinescu and Gabriela Aguilar Law won 6-1 to take the doubles point.
Ofelia Lopez Camarena and
Taylor Lim led 5-2 for the Penguins (5-4) in No. 2 doubles, but the match was left unfinished after the clinch.
Dafinescu kept the momentum rolling for Hilo in singles play as she took the first set 6-2 before holding off Lopez Camarena for a 6-4 victory in the second set.
Kaitlyn Nguyen finished at nearly the same time as she topped Marina Colvee 6-1, 6-1 in No. 1 singles to give Dominican its first team point of the night.
Michelle Li than tied the team score as she knocked off Irena Le 6-2, 6-4 on court five, but van Hoek held off Lim for a 6-3, 6-4 victory to keep the Vulcans ahead. Joyner was in a tight battle on court four with the Penguins'
Kamar Alajeely as Joyner took the first set 6-1, but Alajeely responded with a 6-4 victory in the second set. Joyner was able to get a slim lead in the final set and held on for the 6-3 victory to clinch the team victory for the Vulcans. Aguilar Law and Dominican's
Haley Garcia also had a close singles match with Aguilar Law holding on for a 7-6(2), 6-2 victory.
The Penguins will conclude their road trip Thursday against Hawaii Pacific at 11:30 a.m. HST.
