SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican softball overpowered Notre Dame de Namur 6-1 in the first game of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Penguin Field.
Freshman catcher
Celeste Salas kept her hot hitting going for the Penguins (6-8, 3-2 PacWest) going 2-for-2 with two RBI. Senior outfielder
McKenzie Schumacher went 1-for-2 with a walk and two stolen bases and two runs scored. Sophomore pitcher
Rosa Leguria (2-0) earned the victory after allowing no runs and five hits on 44 pitches in five innings of work.
Schumacher drew a leadoff walk and promptly stole second then moved to third on the errant throw by the catcher.
Lauren Lapinid singled to shallow left-center field to bring her home for the first run of the game. Lapinid moved to second on a sacrifice and then to third on a ground out before
Celeste Salas singled back up the middle to bring her in for the 2-0 lead heading to the second.
Aurora Adams singled for NDNU to lead off the top of the second, but
Alyssa Waltman scooped up a groundball on the next pitch to start a double play to clear the bases for Dominican. Leguria retired the next batter in two pitches as she continued an efficient performance.
Lysette Villegas doubled to right field to lead off the top of the third for NDNU as the ball took an unusual hop under
Vanessa Porto's glove. Jenna Reyes singled to second to put runners on the corners. The Argonauts attempted to bring Villegas home on a double steal but Waltman cut the throw to second and sent it back home where Salas tagged out Villegas. Reyes tried to take third in the relays, but Salas threw back to Ramirez at third for the tag to clear the bases. Lauryn Zabat then grounded out to Leguria to finish the inning.
Peyton Mott singled down the right field line to lead off the bottom of the fourth and then stole second to move into scoring position.
Helena Harris then doubled to center to bring her home and Waltman doubled on a hard line drive down the left field to bring home Harris for the 4-0 lead.
Schumacher singled to right field to keep the momentum rolling in the bottom of the fifth and then stole second. Lapinid put down a sacrifice to advance Schumacher to third, but the first baseman dropped the throw and Schumacher came home. Salas brought home another run with a single back up the middle for the 6-0 lead heading to the sixth.
NDNU got on the board in the top of the seventh off of several bloop singles, but it wasn't enough to erase the deficit.
