Penguins sweep Argonauts

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican softball recorded its second doubleheader sweep in conference play with a 5-1 victory Sunday afternoon against Notre Dame de Namur at Penguin Field.

Sophomore infielder Ebony Garza was perfect from the plate for the Penguins (7-8, 4-2 PacWest) going 3-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Senior outfielder McKenzie Schumacher added a 2-for-4 day from the plate with a run scored. Freshmen Helena Harris and Lauren Lapinid recorded the RBI for Dominican. Freshman pitcher Shelby Keltner earned the complete-game victory with a career-high eight strike outs.

Megan Lawson led the Argonauts (2-10, 0-4 PacWest) going 2-for-3 from the plate with a walk and a home run.

Keltner was able to get out of jams in the first and second inning as she struck out three batters. The Argonauts finally broke through in the third inning as Lawson homered to left field to take the 1-0 lead.

Dominican responded in the bottom of the fourth as Peyton Mott walked and then advanced to third after she recognized the empty base on a sacrifice bunt by Celeste Salas. Helena Harris singled to bring her home and tie the game. Garza then doubled to right center and the relay throw hit the umpire allowing Harris to score and Garza to take third. Garza scored on a wild pitch to give the Penguins a 3-1 lead heading to the fifth.

Schumacher singled as the ball hopped over the pitcher to lead off the bottom of the fifth and Lapinid brought her home with a double to the right-center gap. Lapinid came home after tagging up on a flyout and the throw to third went out of play to give Dominican a 5-1 lead.

Keltner kept things rolling for the Penguins in the top of the sixth as she left a runner stranded at second getting Melissa Garcia swinging. Keltner closed out the game with another strike out before snagging a line drive back to the circle for the final out.

Dominican will return to the diamond Wednesday as it travels north to take on Sonoma State in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at Seawolf Softball Field. Live stats will be available online.
