BRISBANE, Calif. – Dominican softball was unable to find its offensive groove in a 5-0 loss in the final game Saturday afternoon against Academy of Art at Mission Blue Field.
Freshman catcher
Celeste Salas was the only Penguin (5-8, 2-2 PacWest) to reach base more than once with a single and a hit by pitch.
Alyssa Waltman gave up three earned runs in the loss to move to 2-3 on the year.
Haley Arnold-Jolley led the Urban Knights with a complete-game shutout from the circle with four hits allowed. Gracie Sotomayor finished 3-for-3 from the plate for ART U with two RBI and a triple.
The Urban Knights struck first taking advantage of a throwing error to score the games first run, before Cecilia Lopez doubled to left center to make it 2-0 in the bottom of the first. The game ground to a halt after that with the pitcher's dominating play for the next three innings.
ART U manufactured another run in the bottom of the fourth as Alyssa Rasmussen singled through the left side and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Sotomayor then brought her home with a single to left for the 3-0 lead.
Lauryn Henderson then singled to lead off the bottom of the fifth and stole second before Lopez singled up the middle to bring her home for the 4-0 lead. Dominican turned a double play to end the fifth inning to prevent the lead from growing any larger.
Dominican was unable to find its offensive footing as Arnold-Jolley never allowed more than one runner on in any individual inning. The Urban Knights scored one more run as Sotomayor tripled to left center to bring home Rasmussen for the final run of the game.
The Penguins will look to rebounds as they return home Sunday to host Notre Dame de Namur in a doubleheader beginning at noon PST at Penguin Field. Live stats will be available online.
