Penguins walk off to open doubleheader

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Junior utility Alyssa Waltman sent freshman infielder Lauren Lapinid home on a walk-off sacrifice fly as Dominican women's softball opened a doubleheader against Holy Names with a 5-4 win Sunday at Penguin Field.

Lapinid led the Penguins (4-6, 1-0 PacWest) at the plate with a 3-for-4 with an RBI and a clutch double in the bottom of the seventh to put herself in position as the winning run. Senior outfielder McKenzie Schumacher and junior outfielder Vanessa Porto each added 2-for-4 games. Schumacher added two stolen bases and a run, while Porto had an RBI. Sophomore pitcher Rosa Leguria (1-0) earned the victory allowing one run and two hits in 2.2 innnings of relief.

Olivia O'Neal gave the Hawks (3-4, 2-1 PacWest) a 2-for-4 day at the plate with a stolen base and two runs. Haighley Kissee held the Penguins scoreless through two innings before surrendering two runs in the bottom of the seventh to move to 1-1 on the year.

Leguria sat down HNU in order to start the top of the seventh and give the Penguins one last chance at the victory. Ramirez was hit by the first pitch she saw and Lapinid ripped a double down the left-field line to set Dominican up with two in scoring position with one out. Porto sent a blooper over the top of the shortstops outstretched glove to score Ramirez. Waltman then stepped to the plate and sent a towering shot to right field and Lapinid raced home to beat the throw for the walk-off victory.

HNU loaded the bases quickly in the first inning as an error and a walk bracketed Kissee's single to left. Freshman Shelby Keltner pitched her way out of the jam as Lyndsey Widner grounded out to third and Keltner got Cienna Cheshier swinging for the third out.

Things were relatively quiet for the next two innings until Schumacher reached on an error and advanced to second to lead off the bottom of the third. Schumacher then stole third and an errant throw allowed her to come home for the first run of the game.

Alyssa Ramirez then walked and stole second to move into scoring position. Lapinid then singled down the first base line with 2-outs to score Ramirez. Porto and Waltman kept momentum rolling with singles and Lapinid beat a throw home on Waltman's single to take the 3-0 lead.

Keltner shut down the Hawks in the fourth, but O'Neal singled to get their offense rolling in the top of the fifth and they loaded the bases with one out. Widner singled through the left side to score one run and two more scored on a fielding error with two outs to tie the game 3-3.

O'Neal got things rolling in the top of the sixth with a single through the left side and a stolen base with two outs. O'Neal then scored on an errant throw to first base to take the 4-3 lead. Kissee tried to extend the lead on a single to shallow center, but Mott delivered a bullet to get her at home. Schumacher doubled with two outs in the bottom of the frame, but the Penguins were unable to bring her home.
