SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican softball completed its doubleheader sweep of Holy Names with a commanding 6-0 victory Saturday afternoon at Penguin Field.
Senior outfielder
McKenzie Schumacher and freshman shortstop
Lauren Lapinid each went 2-for-3 with a double to lead the Penguins (5-6, 2-0 PacWest). Schumacher added two stolen bases and an RBI, while Lapinid finished with three RBI. Junior pitcher
Alyssa Waltman moved to 2-2 on the year with a complete-game shutout, holding the Hawks (3-5, 2-2 PacWest) to four hits.
Cassidy Simon led off the game for HNU with a walk and headed to second on a sacrifice bunt. After Waltman struck out the next batter, Aly Cerda singled to shallow center field and Simon rounded third to head home. Schumacher had other ideas as she threw a laser to freshman catcher
Mady Salonga who caught the ball and braced for a collision at the plate holding on for the third out.
Schumacher then led off the bottom of the frame with a single and promptly stole second to get in scoring position. After advancing to third on a passed ball,
Alyssa Ramirez laid down a perfect bunt and beat a throw to first to bring in Schumacher. Ramirez then took advantage of no one covering second to move into scoring position. Lapinid brought her home with a bloop single to right field to make it 2-0 heading to the second.
Lyndsey Widner doubled to left to lead off the second as Holy Names looked to respond quickly. Cienna Cheshier followed the double with a hard-hit line drive back to Waltman in the circle, but Waltman made an excellent catch and then caught Widner off second base for the first out of the inning. Dominican quickly retired the next two batters to keep the Hawks off the board.
Waltman then helped her own cause with a single through the left side on the first pitch she saw and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Schumacher then doubled down the right-field line to bring her home for the 3-0 lead.
After three scoreless innings, Bailey Correia looked to get HNU jumpstarted as she singled up the middle and then stole second to get in scoring position. Simon then sent a single to center field, but Correia was held at third and Lapinid cut Schumacher's throw home and rifled the ball over to
Ebony Garza at first who applied the tag on Simon for the third out.
Ramirez reached on an error and Mott walked to put two runners on for the red-hot Lapinid. Lapinid answered the call with a double off the left-field fence to bring in both runners and extend the lead to five. After a pitching change, freshman
Shelby Cefalu singled to third base and Waltman walked to load the bases with one out. Garza then sent a rocket down the right-field line but Carla Duarte made an excellent backhanded grab on the run to allow only one run to score as the Penguins took a 6-0 lead into the sixth.
The Penguins had one last defensive web gem left in them in the sixth as Cerda hit a hard grounder back to Waltman in the circle who fielded it and threw to Lapinid who then sent the ball to first for the inning-ending double play.
Dominican will head across the Golden Gate Bridge to take on rival Academy of Art in a doubleheader Saturday beginning at noon PST at Mission Blue Field. Live stats and video will be available online.
