SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – Dominican women's tennis continued its momentum with an 8-1 victory Saturday afternoon over UC Santa Cruz at the UCSC Tennis Courts.
Kayla Manz and Ines Pelvang got the Banana Slugs (1-3) off to a strong start as they took No. 1 doubles 8-2, but
Kamar Alajeely and
Taylor Lim quickly tied up the match with an 8-4 win on the third court.
Michelle Li and
Ofelia Lopez Camarena kept the momentum heading towards the Penguins (3-2) as they knocked off Savana McDowell and Angelina Powers 8-3 on court two.
Alajeely recorded the first victory in singles with the 6-0, 6-1 win over Pelvang. Lopez Camarena added a 6-2, 6-0 victory in No. 2 singles and
Haley Garcia clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Sam Scarlett.
Taylor Lim topped McDowell 6-3, 6-4 and Li edged Powers in No. 5 singles 7-5, 7-5 to put the Penguins a match from the singles sweep.
After
Kaitlyn Nguyen held on for a 7-6 (6) win in the first set, Manz responded with a strong 6-2 victory to send it to a tiebreaker. Nguyen finished strong taking the tiebreaker 10-4 to complete the sweep in singles.
Dominican will return to the court Friday as it hosts Fresno Pacific at 10 a.m. PST at Castellucci Family Tennis Center.
