SAN RAFAEL, Calif.— Dominican men's basketball went down to the wire with Fresno Pacific University, but the Sunbirds came from behind in the final minute of the game, stealing a 69-66 victory Saturday night at the Conlan Center.
The Penguins (4-16, 4-10 PacWest) earned 23 points after forcing the Sunbirds to commit 15 turnovers down the stretch of the game, but Fresno Pacific's 54.5% shooting from the field was the difference maker late in the game, over the Penguins' 40.7%.
Lazar Djurovic led all scorers with 22 points, going 10-of-18 from the field, and knocking down 2-of-3 from three-point range.
Mateen Hirbod scored a season high of 12 points, and shot 4-of-5 from beyond the arc.
Adrian Antunez netted 21 points for the Sunbirds (7-14, 5-10 PacWest) to go with three steals, two rebounds and one assist. Aamondae followed closely behind with 20 points, eight rebounds, one assist and one steal.
After the Penguins jumped to a 7-4 lead after Djurovic sank a turn-around jumper from the block, the Sunbirds sparked a 7-0 run to take back an 11-7 lead as Coleman fought his way through the paint for a lay-up.
Jaelen Ragsdale helped the Penguins come within one of FPU by knocking down a three with 13:23 left to go in the half, but Coleman responded right back with another drive through the paint for a lay-up off glass to extend the Sunbirds' lead back to 13-10.
Fresno Pacific continued their offensive momentum as they earned a 14-point lead, going on a 16-3 run, capped off with a layup from Spencer Heimerdinger over Djurovic to draw the foul, and complete the three-point play from the charity stripe. The play helped FPU earn a 29-15 advantage over the Penguins with 7:38 left to go in the half.
The Sunbirds would go on to lead by as many as 21 with just three minutes remaining in the first half. Dominican turned the tide as Hirbod hit a three from the corner to spark a 13-0 run to end the half, and send the Penguins into the locker room trailing by just eight points with the score of 42-34.
Djurovic led the Penguins out of the locker room, nailing Dominican's first three baskets, and
Sam Averbuck sank a three from beyond the top of the arc to bring Dominican within four of FPU four minutes into the half. Djurovic continued to power Dominican's offense in the key, earning two quick shots in the paint, including an offensive board and put-back to help Dominican cut the deficit to 48-50 with 13:08 left in the half.
After trading buckets back and forth, a three-pointer from Hirbod gave Dominican their first lead since early in the first half at 60-59. Djurovic and
Jordan Williams helped the Penguins extend their lead to six as Djurovic hit a turn-around jumper, and Williams made his way to the foul line to give Dominican a 66-60 lead with 2:55 remaining.
The Sunbirds shutout the Penguins in the final three minutes of regulation on their way to a 9-0 run to seal the come-from-behind victory. During the run, FPU grabbed an offensive board and Antunez knocked down a three-pointer to take back the lead with under a minute remaining to stun the Penguins at home.
Dominican will look to redeem themselves Monday as they welcome Holy Names University to the Conlan Center for a 7:30 p.m. PST tipoff. Live video and stats will be available online.
