SAN RAFAEL, Calif.— Dominican men's basketball was unable to complete a second half comeback, falling short of Holy Names University, with the final score of 50-55 Monday night at the Conlan Center.
Zamaria Odom led the Hawks (7-13, 5-9 PacWest) offensively with 11 points and four rebounds. Cameron Fini collected nine rebounds, seven points, two assists, one block, and one steal to help take down the Penguins (4-17, 4-11 PacWest).
Sam Averbuck was Dominican's top scorer of the night, leading the Penguins with 14 points and three rebounds.
Jaelen Ragsdale was the only other Dominican player to hit double digit figures, recording 11 points, five rebounds, two assists and one steal. It was a low-scoring matchup as both teams shot under 35% from the field Monday night.
The Hawks ran to a 10-3 lead as Fini and Rob Fuller hit back-to-back threes, and Justice De Corsi pushed their lead to 14-5 as De Corsi backed
Romeo Mays into the paint and slipped around Mays to earn a lay-up off glass with 11 minutes left in the half.
Averbuck helped the Penguins cut the deficit to four as Ragsdale drove through the paint and kicked it out to Averbuck on the wing to knock down his second three of the night. Anthony Dennis retaliated with a midrange jumper to push Holy Names' lead back to 16-10 with 8:22 left until the break.
The Penguins and Hawks traded baskets back and forth, and with 5:19 left to go in the half, Aidan Green dropped a floater to extend the Hawks' lead to 20-12. Averbuck helped the Penguins cut the deficit once more, earning a lay-up and drawing a foul on the play, and completed the three-point play from the foul line. With 22 seconds on the clock, Fini found a seam in the lane and rolled in a lay-up to send the Hawks into the locker room at halftime leading 25-19.
The Penguins opened up the half by cutting their deficit as
Jordan Williams found Averbuck on the perimeter for three.
Lazar Djurovic made a turn-around jumper from the block, and Ragsdale sank another three on the following possession to come within three of Holy Names with the score of 32-29. Dennis retaliated on the other end, making his way through the lane and banked in a floater, earning a foul along the way, completing the three-point play from the charity stripe.
Romeo Mays brought down a thunderous dunk, igniting the Penguin bench and crowd to cut Dominican's deficit to 31-35, 5:23 into the half. But the Hawks were unfazed, extending their lead back to eight as Justin Chambers earned a steal and took it the other direction for an uncontested lay-up in transition to bring the Hawks' lead back to six.
Jordan Williams hit a three pointer from well beyond the arc, bringing the score to 40-43 in Holy Names' favor. With 6:17 left to go in regulation, Ragsdale knocked down a pullup jumper to help Dominican come within one of the Hawks, and Averbuck earned the 46-45 lead by drawing a foul in the paint and sinking both free throws.
After trading baskets, Fuller and De Corsi helped take back a 5-point lead for Holy Names with 3:32 left in the second half, and from there, the Penguins were unable to fully erase the deficit.
Dominican will return to the court Thursday to match up against Concordia University of Irvine for Staff and Faculty Appreciation Day at the Conlan Center. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. PST and live video and stats will be available online.
