SAN RAFAEL, Calif.—Dominican men's soccer took Humboldt State to overtime on Friday afternoon, but a crucial penalty within the first minute of OT resulted in a 4-3 loss for the Penguins.
Dominican (0-1) held the advantage for majority of the game, including leading 3-1 in the second half, but the Jacks never let up forcing OT with a goal by Dalton Rice in the 81st minute of the game. Thirty-three seconds into OT, Humboldt (1-0) penetrated Dominican's box, and a handball by the Penguins allowed the Jacks a penalty kick from Gus Baxter that would solidify the come-from-behind victory.
Senior Forward
Luke Raley sparked Dominican's offense with a brace scoring his first goal in the 29th minute as
Roberto Garcia slipped him a pass in the box and Raley pelted the ball inside the posts for the 1-0 lead. His second came in the 46th minute to give Dominican back a 2-1 lead by way of a penalty kick after sophomore
Kieran Vrklan was taken down inside the box. Freshman
Maxwell Ward earned a corner kick in the 51st minute and put a perfect ball into the box where senior midfielder
Colin Gunby flicked it inside the far post for the 3-1 lead.
Dalton Rice recorded two clutch goals for Humboldt, the first tied the game in the 32nd minute as he took a shot from the middle of the box. Isaiah Dairo shifted the momentum with a goal in the 59th minute as Marco Silveira found him at the top of the box to boot one past the reaching arms of sophomore
Ruben Raygoza and cutting the deficit to 3-2.
Rice then came through again for the Jacks in the 81st minute as he took his defender along the top of the box and snuck one in through traffic to tie the game and send it into overtime.
Dominican returns to the pitch Sunday afternoon as it takes on CSU Monterey Bay at 4 p.m. PDT for the final game of the PacWest-CCAA Kickoff Challenge at Kennelly Field. Live video and stats will be available online.
