SAN RAFAEL, Calif. –Dominican men's soccer lost two first-half leads and ultimately fell 3-2 to Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday afternoon at Kennelly Field.
Off to a hot start, senior forward
Luke Raley recorded his third goal of the season in just two games. Junior midfielder
Roberto Garcia notched his first goal in a Penguin uniform to help DU (0-2-0) take the lead, and sophomore
Ruben Raygoza recorded six saves on the day. However, the Otters (2-0-0) took advantage of several miscues to complete the come-from-behind victory over the Penguins.
CSUMB outshot Dominican with nine shots on goal compared to Dominican's four. Goalkeeper Daniel Lomeli recorded 2 saves and came in clutch for CSUMB down the stretch, fending off a last-minute surge by the Penguins. Adrian Rebollar was the difference maker for the Otters, recording a goal and two assists, with one coming on the winning goal from Walmer Martinez in the 73rd minute of the match.
Raley helped the Penguins get ahead early in the match, pressing the goalkeeper on a pass-back, trapping the ball and putting it into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead 38 seconds into the match. Less than four minutes later, CSUMB leveled the playing field as Rebollar pressured
Colin Gunby in Dominican's backfield, stole the ball, and knocked it in from just outside the box. In the 24th minute,
Roberto Garcia took a corner kick from the left side, and curled it around the inside of the left post to give Dominican the 2-1 lead.
The Otters created a few opportunities to tie the game, but the Penguin backfield came in clutch to keep CSUMB off the board for most of the first half. In the 29th minute, Martinez kicked one past Raygoza that hit the crossbar and
Maxwell Ward was there to clear the ball to safety before any Otter could attempt a shot at the empty net. In the 34th minute, Matthew Lee got loose in the box for a close shot, but
Eddie Silverbush was there to make a sliding save in front of Raygoza.
With 40 seconds left in the half, Rebollar took an Otter corner kick from the right side that found Penner, who headed it to Lopez for the equalizer. Both teams remained scoreless until the 73rd minute when CSUMB earned a free kick in the attacking half and Rebollar connected with Martinez in the box for the winning goal.
The Penguins surged to find the equalizer as Dominican earned a free-kick just outside of the box in the final minutes, but the kick from Garcia flew inches above the crossbar.
The Penguins will look to turn it around Wednesday, as they make their way up to Sonoma State for a 5 p.m. kickoff. Live video and stats will be available online.
