SAN RAFAEL, Calif.—Dominican women's soccer continued to struggle offensively in a 0-0 tie with UC Santa Cruz on Tuesday afternoon at Kennelly Field.
Senior goalkeeper
Alyssa Ramos started for the Penguins (2-1-3) and recorded two saves in 55 minutes played. Sophomore goalkeeper
Jaqueline Catano made her 2019 debut between the posts in the second half of today's game, and stayed in goal for the Penguins in the first overtime period, recording three total saves. It was the third straight double overtime game for Dominican.
Alyssa Diaz Tucker earned the shutout for the Banana Slugs (5-1-2) with four saves through 110 minutes played. UCSC outshot the Penguins 12-6, but had just a one-shot advantage in shots on goal (5-4).
The Banana Slugs controlled the pace of the game right out of the gate, and carried their momentum through much of the first half as the Penguins were slow to create a rhythm. In the sixth minute of play, Tomiko Hoshjima slipped through Dominican's backline to set up a one-on-one with Ramos, but Hoshjima misplayed the roll and Ramos was able to rush out to grab possession. Later in the 12th minute, Amelia Streiffer sent a cross inside the box to Karina Bulli for a shot on goal, but Ramos was there to make the quick save once more.
It wasn't until the second half when Dominican's offense came alive. In the 51st minute,
Cassidy Marquez had an open look at the top left corner of the box but her attempt landed inches to the left of the goal post. A minute later,
Abbie Gould retrieved a through ball in the box but misplayed the ball off her shin as it rolled out of play.
The Banana Slugs attacked Dominican's defending third once more, and Hoshjima let off back-to-back shots to the upper corners of the goal, but Catano was there to make diving stops on both to keep UCSC off the board.
A yellow card from
Kaitlyn Haub in the 87th minute set the Banana Slugs up for a prime free kick just outside the left corner of the box. Izel Gutierrez took the kick and nailed the cross bar on her shot attempt and it bounced away from danger. UCSC earned another set piece from the top of the right corner of the box and Gutierrez aimed for the goal once more, but her shot missed wide left of the post.
Neither team was able to rally together a strong threat to score in each over time period as the game ended in a 0-0 draw after 110 minutes.
The Penguins will have the opportunity to rest their legs before hitting the road to take on William Jessup University on Saturday at noon PDT. Live video and stats will be available online.
