ROCKLIN, Calif. — Dominican women's soccer overpowered William Jessup University for a 3-1 victory Saturday afternoon at Jessup Field.
Kaitlyn Haub,
Annika Cerini and
Saige Kalani each netted their first goals of the season, while Cerini and Kalani also celebrated their first career goals for the Penguins (3-1-3), leading the charge past the Warriors (2-7). Senior goalkeeper
Alyssa Ramos and sophomore goalkeeper
Jaqueline Catano teamed up to earn Dominican's third win of the season as the backline held William Jessup to four total shots in the game.
Warrior Goalkeeper Emma Whigam collected seven saves on Dominican's 10 shots on goal. Alhan Bakideh scored William Jessup's only goal of the game, but it wasn't enough to complete the comeback.
The Penguins pressured the Warriors backfield early as
Lexi Martinez fired off a shot two minutes into the match, but missed just wide. Dominican continued to attack William Jessup as
Katie Bianchi beat her defender into the box and sent a shot at goal in the fifth minute, but Whigam met the attempt for her first save of the day. In the seventh minute,
Kaitlyn Haub attacked the net once more, but once again Whigam was there to keep the Penguins off the board.
In the 23rd minute, Bianchi single-handedly broke through William Jessup's defense and connected with Haub in the box, who sent the ball to the back of the net to help the Penguins to a 1-0 lead.
Dominican outshot William Jessup 12-3 (4-1 on goal) in the first half as they completely controlled the pace. The Penguins also racked up 10 corner kicks to none for WJU. Isabel House earned William Jessup their first shot on goal in the 43rd minute, but Ramos was there to make the diving grab.
Dominican continued their offensive run into the second half as junior defender
Annika Cerini made her way around her defender to gain position in the box and fired off an unassisted attempt to the back of the net to extend Dominican's lead to 2-0 in the 53rd minute.
The Warriors quickly returned the favor as House crossed a ball to Bakideh who sent a shot past Catano to end the silence for the Warriors in the 55th minute. Cerini and Reyes came firing back in the box, each pelting attempts at goal, but Whigam was there to keep Dominican from extending their lead.
As the last minutes of play were winding down, freshman forward
Tanya Bills connected with fellow freshman and defender
Saige Kalani to net a goal in the 84th minute to seal the win for the Penguins.
Dominican will return home on Saturday to open PacWest play against Point Loma Nazarene University at noon PDT at Kennelly Field. Live video and stats will be available online.
