SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's volleyball bounced back from a bad start, but was unable to complete a comeback in a 25-12, 25-18, 21-25, 29-27 loss Monday night to Holy Names at the Conlan Center.
Junior libero
Hana Wyles was all over the court for the Penguins (1-7, 1-2 PacWest) finishing with 28 digs and four assists. Freshman outside hitter
Gabi Maiocco led Dominican with 11 kills, while sophomore outside hitter
Mariah Ahid finished with six kills and 21 digs.
Fanny Chow led the Hawks (2-7, 1-2 PacWest) with 18 kills and nine digs. Holy Names finished with a .200 hitting percentage while holding Dominican to a .086 for the match.
The Penguins took advantage of several Hawk errors to begin the match with a 4-0 run as they looked to continue where they left off Saturday. The momentum was short-lived as Chow found the court on back-to-back kills to right the HNU offense in a 5-0 run to take the lead. Dominican began to struggle offensively and a 14-1 run pushed the Hawks lead into double digits as they cruised in the first set.
HNU used several small runs to build its lead in the second set as Sierra Allen found the court for a kill to make it 8-4 early. Maiocco led the Penguins back into the match with two kills and a solo block in a 5-2 run that cut the deficit to one. Allen provided the response for the Hawks with four kills in a 7-1 run to get the breathing room and momentum they needed to close out the set.
HNU continued to hold the momentum early in the third set, taking advantage of several Dominican errors to take the 4-1 lead. Freshman middle blocker Kianna Pelton then put home a strong kill from the middle to spark some life into the Penguin offense as they reeled off three unanswered points. After trading the next several points, freshman middle blocker
Teddy Batinkova combined with Pelton for a block before putting home a kill of her own to lead a 5-0 run to shift all the momentum to Dominican. The Hawks were able to close within one several times, but the Penguins never relinquished the lead as junior outside hitter
Catherine Johnson gave them the 25-21 victory with a powerful kill.
The fourth set was tight throughout as neither team could create much separation. There were four ties and three lead changes as the teams neared the halfway point of the set. Pelton then found the floor on back-to-back kills before combining with
Eleni Loizou for a block in a 5-1 run that gave Dominican a slight 15-11 advantage. The Hawks chipped away at the lead, eventually tying it on back-to-back kills from Allen. A pair of Penguin errors opened the door late for HNU as they took the 20-18 lead, but the Hawks let the Penguins back into it with errors of their own before a Pelton ace made it 24-23. Several lengthy rallies followed and Dominican had four set points, but were unable to close it out. Allen provided the final nail with a kill and an ace in a 3-point run to end the match for HNU.
Dominican will host Hawai'i Hilo at 7 p.m. PDT Saturday at the Conlan Center as it continues its nine-game homestand. Live stats and video will be available online.
