SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's volleyball fell in straight sets 25-23, 25-13, 25-19 Saturday night to the University of Hawai'i at Hilo at the Conlan Center.
Junior middle blocker
Eleni Loizou led the Penguins (1-8, 1-3 PacWest) with five kills on a .222 hitting percentage to go with four blocks. Junior libero
Hana Wyles added 17 digs with freshman setter
Vanna Marquez contributed 12 digs of her own.
Bria Beale powered the Vulcan (6-5, 1-2 PacWest) attack with 15 kills, while Kendall Kott finished the match with 34 assists. UHH improved its hitting every set finishing with a .122 percentage, while holding Dominican to -.019.
The Penguins rode strong blocking early in the match as freshman middle blocker
Kiana Pelton combined with Loizou for two blocks to take a 3-1 lead. Dominican held the small advantage until Beale found the court on back-to-back kills to spark a 3-0 run to tie the set, but Vulcan errors handed the 10-7 lead right back to the Penguins. Amber Tai then led Hilo on a 6-point run as it looked to take all the momentum, but once again errors and a block from Pelton and Loizou tied the set back up. Dominican looked to take some momentum late as sophomore outside hitter
Mariah Ahid put down back-to-back kills and Loizou followed with a solo block, but the Vulcans closed on a 4-1 run to take the 25-23 set victory.
The Vulcans took control in the second set as two kills and a block from Emily Wade helped power a 6-1 run to take the early five-point advantage. Several Penguin errors aided the Vulcans as they continued to push the lead higher and Kott served up three aces with Beale contributing three kills in a 12-1 run that put the set out of Dominican's reach.
Tai provided the offensive spark for Hilo in the third set with back-to-back kills to build an early 5-2 lead. Beale then took over with four kills in a 6-1 run that pushed the lead to seven. After the lead grew to as many as 11, junior outside hitter
Catherine Johnson led a 5-0 Penguin run to cut the lead to 18-12. Dominican would get as close as four, but the surge was too late as the Vulcans took the 25-19 set victory to clinch the match.
The Penguins will host PacWest frontrunner Chaminade at 7 p.m. PDT Monday at the Conlan Center as they look to rebound. Live stats and video will be available online.
