SAN RAFAEL, Calif.—Dominican women's soccer matched with Cal State East Bay 0-0 in double overtime Saturday afternoon at Kennelly Field.
Senior goalkeeper
Alyssa Ramos recorded her fourth shutout through the first five games of the season, and the 21
st of her career. Ramos made five saves on the day as Dominican's defense restricted East Bay offensively to midfield 66 percent of the time, as the Pioneers were only able to enter Dominican's defensive quadrant 18 percent of the game. Pioneer goalkeeper Jordan Smith recorded her third shutout of the season as she finished with four saves.
The first offensive threat from either team came in the 32
ndminute when Dominican earned a corner kick taken by
Lexi Martinez who connected with
Kayla Kukaua, sending a header at goal, but Smith was there to make the quick save.
Skipping ahead to the 61
st minute, the Pioneers created their best chance of scoring in regulation as Kellie Murphy sent a bullet from beyond the box toward the top of the net. Backpedaling, Ramos punched the attempt over the crossbar to keep CSUEB off the board.
East Bay earned a couple free kicks from beyond the box, but fell just short of meeting the net. The first attempt in the 66
th minute taken by Bri Vallente cleared all players and met Ramos in front of the goal for a save. In the 72
nd minute, a yellow card from Kukaua set up CSUEB with another free kick from beyond the box that met Lauren McDougal in the box, but McDougal sent the header high over the crossbar.
The Penguins earned another opportunity to score in the final minutes of regulation as
Tanya Bills won a face-off and led
Katie Bianchi to a long ball in the box. Bianchi fought to advance past her defender to pull the keeper out, but her shot fell wide. Both programs mustered multiple attacking threats throughout overtime, but fell short of sinking a golden ball.
