SAN RAFAEL, Calif.—Dominican women's soccer had a lock-down defensive battle with Cal State Monterey Bay, which ended in a 0-0 tie Monday afternoon at Kennelly Field.
Senior goalkeeper
Alyssa Ramos held the Otters (4-0-1) scoreless to record her third shutout of the season, and 20th career shutout while collecting five saves through 110 minutes. CSUMB goalkeeper Alyssa Noh recorded four saves on the day for her third shutout of the season.
In the 13th minute of the match,
Kaitlyn Haub posed the first scoring threat pelting the ball from beyond the right corner of the box toward the near post, but Hoh was there to make the diving save to keep Dominican (2-1-1) off the board. In the 25th minute, the Otters attacked Dominican's backline and Sierra Levy unloaded a shot toward the top of the goal, but this time it was Ramos who punched it over the crossbar to keep the game scoreless.
To open the second half, Dominican earned a free kick just left of the Otter's box.
Katie Bianchi took the kick looking for
Kayla Kukaua in the box, but Kukaua headed the ball just right of the far post. In the 72nd minute the Otters attacked Ramos in the box as Allexxis Hand beat her defender to the left post, and shot at Ramos who came charging from within the posts to make the diving grab.
A minute later in the match Jasmine Safarians broke around the left side and took a shot around her defender that skimmed off the crossbar. As the final minutes of the game winded down, Safarians made way toward the box, creating a one-on-one with Kukaua. Kukaua attacked Safarians to make a clutch slide tackle that turned the ball back over to Dominican in the final minutes of regulation.
In the first overtime, each team created a chance to go home with the win. Dominican freshman
Tanya Bills found some space at the top of the box for a shot that sailed just high of the crossbar. The Otters had a crucial opportunity to score with 41 seconds to go in the second overtime as Monica Hrncir beat her defender in a footrace to the box and flipped the ball over Ramos to an empty net, but luckily for the Penguins, the ball bounced just outside the right post.
Dominican will look to break the silence offensively as they welcome Cal State East Bay to Kennelly Field Saturday at 2:30 p.m. PDT. Live video and stats will be available online.
