CHICO, Calif. — Dominican women's soccer fell 1-0 to Chico State on Thursday afternoon at University Soccer Stadium.
Chico State (2-1) held the Penguins (2-1) to three total shots, while the Wildcats surged for 14 shots, seven of which were on goal. Dominican senior goalkeeper
Alyssa Ramos held the Wildcats to just one goal while recording six saves in the match. Camille Lidster notched the lone goal of the game in the 51st minute heading in a corner kick from Kylie Martinez to lead Chico over Dominican.
The Wildcats took control of the first half, recording seven total shots and five on frame, while sophomore
Sofia Odron recorded the lone shot of the half for Dominican in the seventh minute to test Chico's Victoria Graham in the net.
After just six minutes of play, the Penguins turned the ball over, giving the Wildcats the opportunity to find Jordan Doukakis in the box, creating the Wildcat's first scoring opportunity of the half.
Kayla Kukaua challenged Doukakis and managed to force her out of bounds, allowing Dominican to take possession.
In the 15th minute, the Wildcats charged back into their attacking third and Susanna Garcia managed to slip past her defender toward the middle of the box and let off a laser toward the upper left corner, but Ramos earned the save to keep them off the board. Ramos continued to be a fierce presence between the posts as Chico State rallied once again in the 29th minute when Cody Johnson dribbled to her left and sent a shot flying toward the upper left corner of the box. Ramos leaped to punch the ball over the crossbar for another of her five total saves of the first half.
The Wildcats created multiple opportunities to extend the lead down the stretch, including a loose ball and shot attempt from Chloe King in the 65th minute, but Ramos dove at the foot of King to snag the ball before she could fire off a decent shot. Odron again tested Graham late in the game as the Penguins pushed for the tie, but Graham made the save to record the shutout.
The Penguins will look to turn the tide Monday as they take on Cal State Monterey Bay at 4 p.m. PDT at Kennelly Field. Live video and stats will be available online.
