SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's tennis took a 6-1 win over UC Santa Cruz as it played in front of its alumni Saturday afternoon at Castellucci Family Tennis Center.
The Penguins (4-14) got a pregame pep talk from the alumni and seized the momentum early as
Taylor Lim and
Ofelia Lopez Camarena took No. 1 singles 6-2 over the Banana Slugs' (3-11) Ashley Isaac and Isabelle Brown.
Alex Wartenberg and
Michelle Li were not far behind as they defeated Therese Recidoro and Sabrina Lieu of UCSC 6-1 to seal the doubles point.
Kaitlyn Nguyen and
Nicole Bermudez completed the doubles sweep for Dominican with a 6-4 victory on the third court.
Nguyen gave the first win of singles to the Penguins as she topped Kayla Manz 6-2, 6-1 and Wartenberg put Dominican a singles match from the victory with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Brown. The Banana Slugs finally got on the board as Savana McDowell took No. 6 singles 6-3, 6-3, but it was all Penguins from there.
Lim won the first set easily 6-2 before holding off UCSC's Isaac 7-6 (5) in the second set. Lopez Camarena was also in a tight battle on the fourth court but she dispatched Lieu in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5. Vivian Lee struck first for the Banana Slugs on the fifth court with a 6-2 win in the first set, but Li rebounded for the 6-4 victory in the second sets for the Penguins. Li rode the momentum from the second set to a 6-1 victory in the third set for the final point for Dominican.
The Penguins will conclude its season Sunday against No. 30 Sonoma State at 11 a.m. PDT at Castellucci Family Tennis Center.
