SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's tennis fell 4-1 in a tight match with Stanislaus State on Sunday afternoon at Castellucci Family Tennis Center.
The Penguins (3-11) and Warriors (8-5) played for three hours on a sunny afternoon in San Rafael, the second straight long match for Dominican in as many days. Cassidy Ferrell and Kayla Nguyen started Stanislaus State off strong in doubles with a 6-2 victory with Amila Gogalija and Taylor Galya following up with a 6-3 victory on the third court to secure the doubles point.
Alex Wartenberg and
Michelle Li got back into the win column for the Penguins after outdueling the Warriors' Megan Hagerty and Maria Ochoa for the 7-6 (2) victory in No. 2 doubles.
Ferrell notched the first singles victory for Stanislaus State with a 6-1, 6-1 win at the top court. Wartenberg responded for Dominican with a 6-4, 6-3 victory in No. 2 singles to close the gap to 2-1. Galya and Li went back-and-forth on the sixth court, but Galya was able to fend her off for the 6-4, 6-4 win to put the Warriors a match away from the team victory.
Sylvana Talamantes of Stanislaus State took the first set of No. 5 singles 6-0 over Dominican's
Nicole Bermudez, but the two traded games to a 6-6 tie in the second set as Bermudez looked to fend off the defeat. Talamantes won the tiebreaker 7-3 to give the Warriors the victory.
