SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's tennis fell behind early and could not complete a comeback in singles, falling 4-1 Thursday to the University of Hawai'i at Hilo at Castellucci Family Tennis Center.
The Vulcans (3-4) jumped ahead early as Anouk van Hoek and Carmelle Joyner won 6-0 in No. 1 doubles and Sandra Dafincescu and Hina Nishida secured the doubles point with a 6-2 victory on court three.

Alex Wartenberg gave the Penguins (3-7) some momentum heading into singles with a 6-4 victory over Marina Colvee and Irena Le.
Colvee redeemed her doubles loss with a 6-1, 6-2 victory for UHH in No. 1 singles, but Wartenberg gave Dominican a point with a 6-3, 6-4 victory in No. 3 singles. Hoek pushed the Vulcans within a singles match of the victory as she held off
Taylor Lim 6-4, 6-4 on the second court and Le sealed the victory with a 6-2, 6-4 victory in No. 6 singles.
Kaitlyn Nguyen and Li were locked in tight matches splitting sets with their UHH counterparts, but the third sets were left unfinished after the Vulcans secured the victory.
The Penguins will host St. Edward's University in a match Friday at 11 a.m. PDT contingent on the weather.
