Penguins fall to Warriors in singles

TURLOCK, Calif. – Dominican women's tennis started strong, but fell 5-2 as it was unable to hold off Stanislaus State in singles Saturday afternoon at the Stan State Tennis Courts.

Seniors Michelle Li and Alex Wartenberg continued to prove an effective doubles pairing for the Penguins (3-6) as they grabbed a 6-2 victory to move their win streak to three. Amila Gogalija and Taylor Galya evened doubles for the Warriors (3-5) at a match a piece with a 6-3 win on the third court. Dominican's Taylor Lim and Ofelia Lopez Camarena knocked off Cassidy Ferrell and Kayla Nguyen of Stanislaus State 6-3 to give the Penguins the first team point of the match.

The Warriors responded in singles as No. 49 Ferrell claimed a 6-1, 6-0 victory on the top court and Galya added a 6-0, 6-1 victory in No. 6 singles to take a 2-1 lead. Wartenberg answered with a 6-1, 6-1 victory for Dominican to even the match 2-2, but it was all Stanislaus State from there. Maria Ochoa put the Warriors a singles match from clinching the victory with a 6-2, 6-0 win in No. 3 singles. Gagolija then fended off Lim 7-6 (2) in the first set of No. 2 singles and rode the momentum to a 6-0 victory in the second set to secure the victory.

Dominican will return home Thursday for its first home match in a month as it squares off against the University of Hawai'i at Hilo at noon PDT at the Castellucci Family Tennis Center.
