LA MIRADA, Calif. – Dominican women's tennis was unable to hold off Biola University, falling 4-3 Wednesday in its final match of a Southern California Road Trip at the Biola Tennis Center.
The Eagles (5-4) struck first in doubles as Esther Lee and Lauren Lee claimed the top court 6-1, but
Alex Wartenberg and
Michelle Li answered with a 6-0 win for the Penguins (3-5) on the second court shortly after to even the match. Dominican's
Ofelia Lopez Camarena and
Kaitlyn Nguyen jumped ahead 4-1 early in the final doubles match, but Alison Torres and Ines Diaz won five-straight games in a furious comeback to win 6-4 and give Biola the point.
The match remained tight between the two teams heading into singles play. Wartnberg evened the match up with the first win of singles for Dominican, defeating Lily Waterhouse 6-1, 6-3. The Eagles answered as Diaz held off
Taylor Lim for a 6-2, 7-5 victory. Tinisee Kandakai claimed the first set in No. 3 singles 6-2 over Nguyen, but Nguyen answered with a 6-2 victory in the second set to tie the match back up. Kandakai led the third set 3-1 and 5-4, but could not hold off Nguyen who won three-games in a row at both points to take the set 7-5 and tie the match 2-2 between the teams.
Li finished next holding off L. Lee 6-4, 6-4 in No. 5 singles to put the Penguins a point away from the match victory and the final two singles matches going to third set. Bermudez took the first set of No. 6 singles 6-3 for the Penguins, but Torres seized the momentum in the match with a 6-2 win in the second set and then tied the team score 3-3 with a 6-1 victory in the third set.
All eyes turned to No. 1 singles where Lopez Camarena traded sets with E. Lee to a 5-5 tie in the first set before winning back-to-back games for the 7-5 win in the first set. Lee responded taking the second set 6-2. Much like No. 6 singles, E. Lee used the momentum from the second set to propel herself to a 6-3 victory to seal the match for the Eagles.
Dominican will head north to make up a rained out match against Stanislaus State on Saturday at noon PDT in Turlock.
