Penguins fall to Sunbirds

FRESNO, Calif. – Dominican women's tennis fell 7-0 to Fresno Pacific in its first road match of the season at Haak Tennis Complex.

It was the first meeting between the Sunbirds (1-0) and Penguins (0-2) in the teams NCAA Division II eras. Gaya Solomon and Claudia Iglesias of Fresno Pacific opened the match with a 6-2 doubles victory on the second court. 

The other two courts were tightly contested, but once again it was the Sunbirds that came out victorious. Sanne Brull and Alice di Matteo secured the doubles point with a 6-3 victory in No. 3 doubles, while Ioanna Lathouri and Maria Lex edged out Dominican's Kaitlyn Nguyen and Ofelia Lopez 6-4 on the top court.

Lathouri grabbed the first doubles victory 6-1, 6-0 over Lopez and Sanne Brull put the Sunbirds a point from clinching the match after topping Sierra Shackelford 6-1, 6-0 in No. 6 singles. FPU secured the victory on di Matteo's 6-2, 6-0 victory on court four.

Sophomore Taylor Lim proved a bright spot for the Penguins in her first match at No. 1 singles. Lim took Solomon the distance in both sets, but ultimately fell 7-5, 6-4. 

Dominican will stay in the central valley to take on Stanislaus State on Sunday at noon PST at the Stan State Tennis Courts.
