SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's tennis claimed its first victory of the season sweeping American River College 7-0 Sunday afternoon at the Castellucci Family Tennis Center.
After having to cancel several matches so far this season due to rain, the Penguins (1-2) were ready to hit the hard court.
Ofelia Lopez Camarena and
Sierra Shackelford notched the first victory of the day for Dominican, knocking off Danielle Benningfield and Emily Cowan 6-0 in No. 3 doubles.
Michelle Li and
Alex Wartenberg continued their strong play by claiming a 6-1 victory on the top court to seal the doubles point and
Nicole Bermudez and
Taylor Lim also took home a 6-1 victory on court two for the Penguins.
Li kept the momentum rolling with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Benningfield, while Shackelford was close behind with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Cowan in No. 6 singles to put Dominican one match away from clinching the victory. Wartenberg clinched the victory on court three by knocking off Becca Rasmussen of American River 6-0, 6-0. Lopez Camarena also took home a 6-0, 6-0 win, while Bermudez claimed No. 4 singles 6-1, 6-0 over Haley Van Orman.
The closest match of the day came in No. 1 singles between Lim and the Otters' Eva Spindler. Spindler won the first set 6-3 and Lim responded in the second set 6-4 in an even pairing. Lim though capitalized on her momentum in the tiebreaker set winning 10-4 to complete the sweep.
Dominican will have a week off before heading to Mills College for a match Friday, March 1, at Meyer Tennis Courts in Oakland.
