Box Score SAN FRANCISCO – Dominican women's basketball was unable to stop a hot-shooting Academy of Art University in a 123-89 loss Tuesday night at Kezar Pavilion.
Jerusha Paine led the Penguins (4-7, 1-4 PacWest) with 33 points and nine rebounds, while
Marisa Mondave added 16 points and
Julia Razo chipped in 13 points. Tayler Bennett led the Urban Knights (4-4, 2-2 PacWest) with 25 points on 7-of-11 shooting from behind the arc before sitting out for most of the fourth quarter. Josselyn Morris went 9-for-13 from 3-point range to add 33 points, with 18 of her points coming in the final period.
Academy of Art hit 21 shots behind the arc on 63.6% shooting, while holding Dominican to 23.1% from 3-point range.
Bennett sparked the Urban Knights on a 9-2 run with a pair of 3-pointers as they built an 18-10 lead near the halfway point of the first quarter. The teams continued to trade baskets as the Penguins were aggressive in their offensive attack drawing eight fouls on ART U in the period. Morris drew a foul on the final possession of the quarter and hit all three free-throws to send the Urban Knights into the second with an 11-point lead.
Brittney Cedeno looked to give Dominican some momentum as she zipped a pass into Paine for a layup before spinning around a defender on a fastbreak on the next possession for a hook shot to cut the lead to seven. Brianna Cates and Bennett each knocked down 3-pointers in response to quickly retake the double-digit lead at 42-29 with 7:35 remaining. The Urban Knights continued to build their lead as turnovers haunted the Penguins. Morris knocked down a shot from the top of the arc to make it 54-34 with 4:11 remaining in the half and the lead grew as large as 29.
ART U continued its hot shooting from distance as Bennett knocked down a 3-pointer to extend the lead to 32 five minutes into the second half. Dominican was unable to find the answer on the offensive side of the ball as the Urban Knights continued to pull away as they cruised to the 34-point victory.
Dominican will look to get back on track Saturday as it heads to the East Bay to take on Holy Names University at 4 p.m. PST at Tobin Gymnasium. Live stats and video will be available online.
