Harris earns 100th career win against Bay Area rival

SAN FRANCISCO— Dominican men's basketball head coach Booker T. Harris earned the 100th win of his career Thursday night in a 77-70 win over Academy of Art University at Kezar Pavilion.

"There are so many people that deserve recognition for tonight, and it begins with the players that have given me the opportunity to coach them. As well as all of the assistants and administrators that I have had the opportunity to work with here at Dominican," head coach Booker T. Harris said. "For it to happen in my hometown of San Francisco with my parents and brother in attendance, is truly a blessing."

Jordan Williams sparked the Penguins' (1-9, 1-3 PacWest) offense with 19 points, five rebounds, three steals and one assist. Sam Averbuck knocked down 3-of-6 from 3-point range to finish with 11 points and five rebounds. Lazar Djurovic brought down eight boards and dished out four assists with five points and one block to allow Dominican to earn the road victory.

Adrian Byrd-Jelinek earned 16 points, eight rebounds and one block, while Stefan Milivojevic also recorded 16 points, four rebounds, and one assist for the Urban Knights (3-7, 1-2 PacWest).

The Penguins and Urban Knights fought neck and neck throughout most of regulation, but it wasn't until midway through the second half when Dominican pulled ahead and controlled the pace of play until the final buzzer. After ART U had pulled within three, Dominican bounced back and pushed the lead to nine as Jordan Williams stole the ball away from Kai Tease in the backcourt, and found Thomas Faustka down the baseline for a reverse layup.

Dominican continued to push the pace with a 5-0 run to take its largest lead of the game at 64-50 as Chase Anderson snuck behind the defense for a transition layup with 8:06 left in the game. The Urban Knights were unable to cut any closer than six in the final minutes as the Penguins held on for their first victory of the season.

Dominican got off to a fast start as Christopher Williams II knocked down a fade-away, midrange jumper to cap an opening 10-2 run over the first four minutes. ART U responded out of the media timeout with a 10-0 run to take a two-point lead as Milivojevic nailed a jumper from the baseline and Dante Williams capped off the run with a coast-to-coast layup with 7:51 into regulation.

The teams continued to trade baskets until Averbuck found Christopher Williams II in the corner for a 3-pointer on a fast break to give the Penguins back the 25-22 advantage with six minutes left in the half. After the Urban Knights came within one point of Dominican in the final two minutes, Djurovic played a give-and-go in the lane with both Christopher Williams II and Jordan Williams on consecutive drives to send the Penguins into the break leading 35-30.

Averbuck knocked down a shot from the top of the arc to help Dominican quickly extend the lead to 42-33 in the opening two minutes of the second half. ART U cut the lead to three as Dante Williams collected a defensive rebound and took it all the way for a reverse lay-up to make it 46-43 with 14:23 left on the clock.

The Penguins will look to keep things rolling as they host Chaminade University at the Conlan Center this Saturday at 4 p.m. PST. Live video and stats will be available online.
