Penguins unable to slow down Silverswords

SAN RAFAEL, Calif.— Tyler Cartaino led Chaminade past Dominican men's basketball 90-59 Saturday afternoon in a PacWest matchup at the Conlan Center.

Cartaino did it all for the Silverswords (6-4, 4-1 PacWest), leading all scorers with a double-double of 20 points, 10 rebounds, and added three assists and three steals. Kendall Small shot 8-for-11 from the field, recording 17 points, five rebounds, three assists and one steal. The Silverswords were successful in turning Dominican miscues into points, as they recorded 14 points off turnovers to create distance between the Penguins early in the first half, and continued to apply pressure with sharp shooting in the second half.

Dominican never held a lead over the Silverswords, and Chaminade allowed only two Dominican players to reach double digits on the offensive end. Sam Averbuck went 6-for-11 from the field to finish with 15 points and three rebounds. Lazar Djurovic added 10 points, five rebounds and one block.

Chaminade rushed to an early lead to begin regulation with seven of its 19 points coming from Cartaino, who capped off the hot start with a 3-pointer in transition to give the Silverswords a 14-5 lead. The Penguins quickly cut their deficit back to five as Averbuck and Djurovic hit two quick buckets for Dominican. But the Silverswords went up-tempo in an 11-3 run to push their lead back to 13 with 7:30 left to go in the half.

Dominican went cold down the stretch in the first half, and Cartaino knocked in Chaminade's final two shots, including an offensive rebound and put-back under the rim to lead the Silverswords into the locker room with a 36-19 lead.

After trading buckets to begin the second half, Cartaino created a spark for the Silverswords once more, going coast-to-coast on a fast break for a layup and then backing down his defender on the next offensive possession to lay one in off the glass for the 56-36 lead nearing the midway point of the half.

From there on out, Chaminade dominated from the offensive and defensive end, extending their lead to as many as 27 points when Bill Awet grabbed an offensive board and put it back in.

After tonight, the Penguins enter winter break and will return in the new year to face Holy Names University on Jan. 4 at Tobin Gymnasium. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. PST and live video and stats will be available online.
