LA MIRADA, Calif. – Dominican women's volleyball fell 25-10, 25-15, 25-21 Friday night to Biola University at Chase Gymnasium to open its final road trip of the season.
Rebecca Smith led the Penguins (3-23, 3-18 PacWest) with five kills, 10 assists and eight digs.
Hana Wyles added 17 digs and a service ace, but Dominican struggled offensively with a .076 hitting percentage.
Sabrina Winslow powered the Eagles (16-13, 13-8 PacWest) offensively with 12 kills and seven digs, while Raegan Tjepkema added 11 kills and three blocks. Biola finished the match with a .294 hitting percentage and six blocks.
Tjepkema got the Eagles off to a strong start in the first set with two kills and a block to highlight an 8-1 run build a six-point advantage. The Penguins were able to get it within five once more, but errors proved their undoing resulting in seven of Biola's final eight points in a 25-10 victory.
Dominican cleaned things up in the second set as they committed only one error and
Teddy Batinkova put down an overpass for a kill to tie the set at 6-6. Sabrina WInslow helped the Eagles create some separation as she powered a 9-1 run with three kills to take the 15-7 lead.
Mariah Ahid found the floor for three straight kills for the Penguins as they used a 5-1 run to cut the deficit back to four. It was as close as they would get as Vanessa Garcia served up two aces and Tjepkema collected two block assists in a 6-point run to put the set away for Biola.
Dominican continued to show improvement in the third set as Smith capped an early 4-0 run with three straight kills to take a 6-3 lead. The Eagles kept it close for the next several minutes and Abby Brewster spread the ball around to three different attackers in a 5-1 run to tie the match 10-10.
Kiana Pelton answered immediately with a kill and an ace to put the Penguins back in front by two, but once again the varied attack of Biola led to a 5-1 run and the Eagles jumped ahead 16-14. Dominican would not go down easily as it tied the set twice with Pelton and
Eleni Loizou combining for a block to make it 20-20, but three attack errors down the stretch helped Biola seal the sweep.
The Penguins will conclude their season Saturday at 3 p.m. PST against Concordia University Irvine at CU Arena. Live stats and video will be available online.
