Penguins fall in final match of 2019

IRVINE, Calif. – Dominican women's volleyball concluded its 2019 season with a 25-19, 22-25, 25-15, 25-19 loss Saturday night to Concordia University Irvine at CU Arena.

Sophomore outside hitter Tiffany Wong led the Penguins (3-24, 3-19 PacWest) with her eighth double-double of the season with 17 kills and 10 digs. Junior outside hitter Catherine Johnson added 10 kills, while freshman middle blocker Edee Leslie finished the match with six kills and five blocks.

The Eagles (18-12, 12-10 PacWest) spread the ball around to 13 different attackers in the match with Mackenzie Jensen leading their team with 10 kills. Jaclyn Brown added a match-high 34 digs to go with eight kills.

Kylie Breitenwischer capped off a strong start for CUI on senior day as she found the court for back-to-back kills to give it the 6-1 lead. Dominican began to chip away at the lead and Wong sparked a 4-0 run with back-to-back kills of her own to pull back within one at 12-11. Hannah Tostado provided the immediate answer for the Eagles collecting two block assists and a kill in a 4-point run to retake the five-point advantage. Brianna Latigue then served up a pair of aces in another 4-0 run to extend the lead to seven and CUI cruised to the victory in the opening set.

Wong helped the Penguins find a groove early in the second set as two more kills sparked a 3-0 run that Rebecca Smith ended with a kill off the block to give them the 5-3 lead. The score remained close with several small runs lifting the Eagles to a 13-11 lead before Wong put down three more kills and Hana Wyles added an ace in a 4-1 run to retake the lead. The set continued to seesaw until Kiana Pelton powered Dominican to a set ending 4-0 run with two kills before she combined with Mariah Ahid for a block to take the 25-22 victory.

Brown sparked the Eagles early with a kill and an ace while Riley Gill found the court with two kills of her own to take the 4-2 lead in the third. CUI then moved the ball around to several different attackers in a 5-0 run that extended its lead to 15-8 at the midway point. The lead grew to as many as 12 as the Eagles were hitting all cylinders to take the 2-1 lead in the match.

Brown topped a set opening 4-0 run in the fourth with an ace before Kailyn Case found the floor for three aces in a 6-0 run that gave CUI the 13-3 lead. Several small 3-0 runs helped the Penguins chip into the lead as they got within five at 23-18 on Wong's final kill of the match, but the Eagles were able to close it out with a pair of side-out points for the victory.
