Eagles earn golden goal in overtime

SAN RAFAEL, Calif.— Dominican women's soccer came from behind to force overtime with Concordia University Irvine, but the Eagles earned the Golden Goal to take the 2-1 win over the Penguins.

Marianna Maldonado earned the first goal for the Eagles and Jadenn Carrillo scored the golden goal in overtime, allowing CUI to sneak away with the win. Concordia goalkeeper, Kaelyn Whitcomb earned the win from the box as she recorded three saves on the day.

Freshman forward Victoria Avina netted Dominican's lone goal of the day, making it her fourth of the year. Senior goalkeeper Alyssa Ramos collected 7 saves on the day, bringing her season total to 72.

The Eagles earned the first lead of the game in the second minute as CUI earned a free kick just outside the left corner of the box. Danni Barton took the kick and connected with Maldonado streaking from right to left in front of goal to send a back-heel kick to the net for the 1-0 lead.

Later in the 35th minute, the Eagles earned a series of corner kicks that resulted in a shot attempt from Molly Melanson, but Ramos was there to pick up the save.

With under a minute to play in the first half, CUI made their way upfield and into the box for an attack, but Dominican defender Kayla Kukaua broke up the attack by clearing the ball back to midfield. The Eagles regained possession and slipped into the box once more. Grace Dalo sent a shot at the right corner of the goal, and Ramos collected another save to keep CUI from adding to their lead before going into the half.

Shortly after returning from the break, Dominican recovered a poor pass from the Eagles around midfield and Alison McNeal charged downfield, passing it through to Avina in the box. Avina slipped behind her defender to send a shot to the right corner of the net to tie the game, 1-1 in the 48th minute.

Following a free kick for Dominican in the 67th minute, Lexi Martinez connected with Kaitlyn Haub at the top of the box to fire off a shot at goal, but Haub's attempt missed high over the cross bar.

Later in the 73rd minute, Concordia's Megan Hussey made a run down the right sideline cutting towards the goal and sent a cross to Analisa Gjonovich in the box for a header at goal, but couldn't sneak it past Ramos. Neither team could connect on an offensive attack down the stretch, leading the game into overtime.

Twenty-five seconds into the extra period, The Eagles regained momentum upfield and Brooke Zavosky sent a cross to Carrillo on the opposite end of the box to beat Ramos to the left corner of the goal for the golden goal.

Dominican will celebrate their final game of the 2019 season on Saturday as they take on Azusa Pacific University at 11 a.m. PDT at Kennelly Field. Live video and stats will be available online.
