Penguins shut out Cougars on senior day

SAN RAFAEL, Calif.— Dominican women's soccer shut out the No. 5 team in the PacWest, Azusa Pacific University, earning a 1-0 result Saturday morning at Kennelly Field.

APU (9-6-2, 5-4-1 PacWest) held the Penguins (5-7-6, 2-6-3 PacWest) to just four shots on the day, but freshman midfielder, Gabrielle Wampler made one of those four chances count as she earned her first goal of her collegiate career just before the half. Senior goalkeeper Alyssa Ramos collected eight saves on her way to earn her eighth shutout this season, and 25th of her career.

The game was off to a slow start offensively for both teams until the 20th minute when Kayla Grisham and Emmy Koflanovich played a give-and-go down the left sideline and Grisham made her way inside the box and pelted a shot toward the left corner of the goal, but Ramos was there to make the diving save.

APU continued their offensive momentum into the 35th minute when Jordan Hill led Grisham into the box, and Grisham slipped in between Wampler and Kalani toward goal, but the two Penguin freshmen were able to steal the ball away from Grisham to clear the attack.

With just five minutes left in the half, APU created another give-and-go on the left sideline for another opportunity for Brooke Bern to land a shot on goal form the top of the box, but Ramos collected the save to give possession back to the Penguins.

With only one shot from the Penguins and 1:46 remaining in the half, Dominican stringed together an offensive attack deep in Cougar territory as Katie Bianchi took her defender toward the right goal post and crossed it back to Wampler at the top of the box. Wampler secured the cross, and with her back to the net, quickly turned and sent a bullet across her body to the upper left corner of the box, past the reaching arms of Decker to give Dominican a 1-0 lead heading into the half.

In the 57th minute, the Cougars charged into the Dominican backfield, and Maddy Morrison slipped between two defenders and into the box to get a shot off, but Ramos slid into Morrison's kick to collect the shot.

The Cougars continued to attack Dominican's half of the field, and in the 60th minute, Koflanovich sent an arching cross to Morrison in the box for a header, but Morrison's header landed wide of the goal.

The Penguins took the following drive downfield as Lexi Martinez led Annika Cerini down the left sideline and Cerini forced a corner kick. Martinez took the corner the curved it around the near goalpost, but Kovisto was there to deflect the attempt out of bounds. The Penguins earned another corner, but could not connect in the box as the Cougars cleared the attack.

Within seven minutes to go in regulation, APU's Katie Prado streaked across the box and sent a shot to the top left corner of the goal that looked promising from Prado's standpoint. But Ramos was there for the biggest save of the day, poking the ball just over the cross bar. The Cougars continued to pressure Dominican's defense in crucial minutes of the match as they fired off three more shots at goal in the last five minutes of regulation. Ramos and the Dominican defense deterred the Cougars for long enough to shut out APU and earn a victory on senior day.
