Penguins earn draw with Sunbirds

FRESNO, Calif.— Dominican women's soccer earned a 0-0 draw with Fresno Pacific University after double overtime Wednesday night at Ramirez Field.

The Penguins (3-2-4, 0-1-1 PacWest) struggled to attack the net, finishing the game with just one shot on goal, landing in the 103rd minute of play, compared to the Sunbirds' 11 shots on goal. Senior Goalkeeper Alyssa Ramos rose as the key player of the game as she earned her fifth shutout victory of the season and 22nd of her career after collecting 11 saves.

Fresno Pacific Goalkeeper Hannah Hathaway earned her first career shutout, while having to record just one save.

Throughout the first half Ramos kept the Penguins in the match, as the Sunbirds (0-6-2, 0-0-2 PacWest) fired off 13 shots (5 on goal), compared to Dominican's lone shot of the half. In the 37th minute FPU earned a corner kick from a blocked shot in the box, taken by Tori De Leon, sending a shot curving in around the front post but Ramos was there to make the save.

Later in the 39th minute the Sunbirds came firing back once more as Nalani Wall beat her defender into the box and fired in a shot at goal. Ramos made a diving save, deflecting the ball back to Wall who quickly sent a second attempt at goal, but Ramos recovered to secure a second save and give Dominican possession.

With a minute left in the first half, The Sunbirds earned another corner kick taken by De Leon, connecting with Jet Hardy for a shot within the box, but Hardy's header went high off the cross bar.

The Sunbirds and Penguins traded attempts to begin the second half, but neither team could catch the keepers off guard. In the 84th minute Rachel Anderson slipped by her defender and landed a shot at goal, but Ramos silenced the attack with yet another save. In the 86th minute FPU earned a corner kick that would give them the opportunity to break the tie, but the Penguins were able to clear the attack and send the ball in the other direction.

The Sunbirds attacked to begin the first overtime period, as De Leon sent a shot toward the top right corner of the net, but Ramos quickly snuck in between the shot and goal to snatch another save. The attempt from De Leon was the only attack from either team in the first overtime, sending the game into double overtime.

Dominican earned their first shot on goal in the 103rd minute when Annika Cerini beat her defender to the box and chipped a shot toward the net, but wasn't able to slip it past Hathaway. FPU earned one last shot in the 106th minute, but Anderson missed wide of the post to end the game in a draw.

Dominican will return home to Kennelly Field Saturday to take on Biola University at noon PDT. Live video and stats will be available online.
