SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's soccer competed alongside Biola University, but was unable to comeback after a late goal, falling 0-1 Saturday afternoon at Kennelly Field.
Senior goalkeeper
Alyssa Ramos finished the game with 7 saves, while Dominican's defense, led by junior defender
Kayla Kukaua, held the Eagles to only 8 shots on goal throughout the entire match.
Biola's Christina Rodriguez led the Eagles to earn their sixth consecutive shutout, improving their overall record to 5-3-1, and 2-0 in conference. The Eagles' backline held Dominican to just one shot on goal, while Sarah Yang netted the only goal of the game to seal the win for Biola.
Dominican (3-3-4, 0-2-1 PacWest) and the Eagles fought back and forth to begin the contest, and in the 10
th minute the Penguins earned their first solid attack of the day as
Yasmine Angel backed her defender down and slipped around to lead
Annika Cerini down the left sideline. Cerini fought for position and drew Rodriguez out of the 6-yard box to chip it over, but the attempt missed inches wide of the right post.
In the 11
th minute, the Eagles came right back as Christine Goodman made a run down the right sideline and inside the box, forcing Ramos to rush the attack, and chipped it over Ramos to an empty net, but the attempt missed wide and into the side netting.
The Penguins earned another opportunity to take the lead in the 36
th minute as
Ana Herrera earned a free kick just outside of the box, and connected with Angel for a header attempt, but Rodriguez was in the right place at the right time for the save.
Later in the 72
nd minute with the game still scoreless, Colie Martin met a pass just beyond the box and fired a shot at goal through traffic, but this time it was
Lexi Martinez to make the save in front of the net and clear the attack to sustain the 0-0 tie.
It wasn't until the 78
th minute when Madyson Brown worked to create space and dished it off to Madi Reeves down the right sideline. Reeves quickly fed it to Yang in front of the right goal post for the winning goal.
The Penguins will look to bounce back as they travel to the University of Hawai'i at Hilo for their first game of the 4-game road trip on Wednesday, October 16
