Penguins suffer double overtime loss to ART U

SAN FRANCISCO— Dominican women's soccer came from behind to force extra time Thursday morning, but the Academy of Art scored the golden goal in the 104th minute to take the 2-1 victory at Paul Goode Field.

Senior goalkeeper Alyssa Ramos and the Penguins (3-5-6, 0-4-3 PacWest) defense fended off the Urban Knights (6-4-3, 2-2-2 PacWest) for the majority of the match, as Ramos collected four saves in the tightly contested match up. Freshman Victoria Avina netted her second career goal to tie the game at one apiece late in the match.

ART U was led by goalkeeper Lara Pflicke who kept the Penguins off the scoreboard until the 80th minute while collecting four saves. Katie Williams recorded the first goal of the game in the 68th minute, and Anissa Wilson scored the golden.

The Penguins and Urban Knights battled back and forth through most of the first half until the Penguins created an opportunity to flood the box in the 27th minute as Tanya Bills found a seam through the defense and sent a shot at goal, but missed just right of the post. Brooklyn Morera received a cross into the box on the counter-attack and sent a rocket at the bottom left corner of the net, but Ramos made a diving save to keep the game level.

Saige Kalani was able to win possession off the deflection of a Cassidy Marques shot and put her attempt on frame, but Pflicke secured the ball to send the game into the half tied.

After trading shot attempts to begin the second half, Sydney Cooke connected with Katie Williams on a corner kick and Williams headed the ball into the back netting for a 1-0 lead in the 68th minute.

The Penguins pushed for the equalizer and Ana Herrera crossed a ball into the box in the 80th minute for Avina who sent a chip past the reaching arms of Pflicke for the equalizer. Dominican continued their offensive push in search of the go-ahead goal as Gabrielle Wampler sent a shot inside the left post, but Pflicke made the diving grab as the game headed to overtime.

After each team failed to score in the first extra period, Morera crossed a pass to Wilson inside the box in the 104th minute and Wilson headed a shot past Ramos to the back of the net for the golden goal to seal the 2-1 victory.

Dominican will return to Kennelly Field for the first time in weeks as it takes on Holy Names University on Saturday at 11 a.m. PDT. Live video and stats will be available online.
