Penguins unable to complete comeback against Hawks

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's soccer fell behind early and was unable to complete a late comeback, as it fell to Holy Names University 2-3 Saturday afternoon at Kennelly Field.

Freshmen Alison McNeal and Victoria Avina each found the back of the net against the Hawks (1-10-3, 1-4-2 PacWest), while Avina also recorded an assist on McNeal's goal. Senior goalkeeper Alyssa Ramos earned the start for the Penguins (3-6-6, 0-5-3 PacWest) and completed three saves, but it wasn't enough to fend off the Hawks throughout 90 minutes of action.

Holy Names earned their first win of the season with the help of Ashley Settles, Kirsten Phillips and Abbi Alexander, as they each netted a goal in the Hawk's victory over the Penguins. Goalkeeper Nyah Summers earned the win for HNU, and recorded 9 saves throughout the day.

The Hawks ran to an early lead in the eighth minute of play as Alexander crossed a ball into Phillips in the box, who headed it past Ramos for the score. From there, the Hawks showed no signs of slowing down. Three minutes later, Cassidy Ballard threaded the needle to find Phillips in the box, sending a chip over Ramos to the back of the net to quickly extend their lead to 2-0, 11 minutes into the game.

After trading attempts, the Penguins fought to get on the board in the 34th minute as Avina muscled her way around her defender and flooded the box from the right corner flag, sneaking a pass to McNeal in front of goal. McNeal quickly sent a shot at Summers that managed to roll underneath her and fall into the net, cutting Dominican's deficit to 2-1 leading into the half.

The Hawks wasted no time in extending their lead back to two after the break, as Phillips led Alexander into the box for the chip over Ramos to push Holy Names ahead 3-1 in the 49th minute.

With 4:45 remaining in regulation, Katie Bianchi sent a ball over Avina, leading her into the box, and Avina fired a shot to the back of the net to cut Dominican's deficit to just one, but the Penguins ran out of time at the end of the match to complete the comeback.

Dominican will return to Kennelly Field Saturday, Nov. 9 to take on Notre Dame de Namur at 10 a.m. PDT. Live video and stats will be available online.
