Penguins fall prey to Eagles

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican women's volleyball fell 3-1 (25-8, 24-26, 25-12, 25-14) to Biola Saturday morning at the Conlan Center.

Freshman middle blocker Edee Leslie led the Penguins (1-18, 1-13 PacWest) with seven kills, two aces and a block. Sophomore middle blocker Kiana Pelton added five kills and three blocks. Sabrina Winslow powered the Eagles (12-9, 9-4 PacWest) with 15 kills and three blocks, while teammate Raegan Tjepkema added 12 kills and three blocks.

Biola took advantage of several Dominican errors in the opening minutes to build a 9-1 lead. The Penguins continued to struggle in the set committing 10 unforced errors and the Eagles were able to take the 25-8 victory.

Dominican adjusted its lineup in the second set as neither team was able to open much of a lead in the early minutes. Madison Beebee entered for the first time for Biola and recorded back-to-back kills to spark a 4-0 run to make it 9-6 in favor of the Eagles. Beebee continued to provide a spark recording two kills to help extend the lead to six during a 6-1 run. Freshman Vanna Marquez then entered late for the Penguins and served up an ace to spark a 5-0 run to tie the set 18-18. The teams continued to trade points and a Winslow helped the Biola reach set point first with a pair of late kills, but Leslie found the court on a perfectly placed serve to combine with two Eagle errors to give Dominican the 26-24 victory.

The third set saw five lead changes in the early moments and Tjepkema swung the momentum to Biola with two kills from the middle before combining with Bekah Roth for a block to make it 13-8 Eagles. The teams traded several points, but Abby Brewster found the court on a dump set before adding two aces to close the set on a 7-0 run for Biola.

Dominican struggled again with unforced errors in the fourth set as the Eagles got out to an early 8-3 lead. Tjepkema led several small runs for Biola to continue to extend the lead as she finished the set with four kills, two blocks and an ace. The Penguins were unable to gain any momentum as they fell 25-14.

Dominican will hit the road next week to take on Point Loma Nazarene University Friday at 7 p.m. PDT at Golden Gymnasium. Live stats and video will be available online.
