Penguins unable to overcome first half deficit

WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Dominican women's soccer failed to create enough chances to overcome an early deficit in a 3-1 loss to Hawai'i Pacific University Monday night at Waipio Stadium.

The Sharks' (7-3-1, 4-1-0 PacWest) defense held the Penguins (3-4-6, 0-3-3 PacWest) to five total shots with three on goal in 90 minutes of play, giving goalkeeper Marissa Froio the win for HPU. Jacey Iwane, Nina Gonzalez and Mya Tolentino each netted a goal for the Sharks. Nina Gonzalez also added two assists to her stat line.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jaqueline Catano recorded one save in her first career start and freshman forward Tanya Bills netted Dominican's lone goal of the night and its first since Oct. 5.

The Sharks wasted no time getting on the board in the sixth minute as Brittny Ihara made her way downfield and lobbed a ball to Gonzalez from the top of the box, who tipped it to Iwane for the goal.

In the 21st minute the Sharks came rushing back into Dominican's defending third as Madrid muscled around her defender and took a shot at goal, but it was easily swept up by Catano to send it the other direction. HPU did not let up and before Dominican could let off a shot at goal, it was back on the attack in the 23rd minute. Callie Rheaume crossed the ball to Gonzalez inside the box for a chip in to make it 2-0 for the Sharks.

Dominican looked to answer before the end of the half as Annika Cerini outran her defender into the box and whistled a shot toward the bottom right corner of the goal, but Froio made the diving save.

Dominican maintained its late momentum in the second half as Bills muscled her way around a defender inside the box and sent a right-footed shot past the reaching arms of Froio in the 50th minute to get back within one.

Gonzalez continued to be the playmaker for HPU and helped the Sharks regain momentum as she found Tolentino for a goal in the box make it 3-1 and seal the win.

Dominican will return back to the Bay Area to take on Academy of Art University Sunday at noon PDT at the City College of San Francisco. Live video and stats will be available online.
