Penguins unable to connect offensively against Silverswords

HONOLULU— Dominican women's soccer was unable to connect offensively, ending in a 0-0 draw with Chaminade University of Honolulu Saturday afternoon at Saint Louis Field.

It was yet another battle of defenses as Senior goalkeeper Alyssa Ramos collected three saves as the Penguins (3-3-6, 0-2-3 PacWest) held the Silverswords (1-4-2, 1-3-0 PacWest) scoreless throughout 110 minutes of action. Chaminade Goalkeeper Naomi Takata also earned the shutout, and was tested on five shots on goal, as the Penguins struggled to create chances inside the box.

The Silverswords tested Ramos in the second minute as Kirstin Wong received a long ball down the right sideline and made her way toward the right goal post, sending a shot at goal that tipped off the reaching arms of Ramos before being cleared by the Dominican backline.

In the 23rd minute, Randi Fontes drew a foul on Kayla Kukaua just outside the right corner of the box. Fontes took the free kick and sent it straight into the defensive wall, collected the rebound and sent a second attempt to Cailla Fabro for a header, but the shot missed inches wide of the left post.

In the 37th minute, Victoria Avina led Tanya Bills down the left sideline and Bills chipped a cross to Trinity Reyes in the box for a header at goal, but Takata was there for the save.

With 1:13 left in the first half, the Penguins drew a foul just outside the box, setting up a free kick and shot attempt for Kukaua. Kukaua took the kick with 19 seconds on the clock and pelted the cross bar, allowing Reyes to regain possession for the Penguins. Reyes fired off another shot at the bottom left corner of the goal, but Takata made another diving save to keep things scoreless at the break.

In the 74th minute, the Silverswords sent a long ball over the head of Fontes toward goal. Ramos rushed outside of the box to beat Fontes to the ball, but committed the foul. April Barnes took the free kick and sent a shot inches high of the cross bar.

Both programs traded attempts throughout the end of the second half, but couldn't find the back of the net and a fight resulted in two Penguins and a Silversword being ejected from the game as the teams headed into overtime.

In the first over time, Dominican earned two corner kicks and an opportunity to end the game as Reyes sent a shot wide.

Within a minute remaining in the second overtime, the Silverswords rushed downfield in an attempt to sneak one in in the final seconds but the Penguins' defense cleared the ball back to midfield as time ran off the clock.

Dominican will make a quick turnaround as it matches up against Hawai'I Pacific University Monday at 4:30 p.m. HST. Live video and stats will be available online.
