HONOLULU— Dominican men's soccer earned its first back-to-back victories of the season as it defeated Chaminade 3-2 at Saint Louis Field.
Sophomore defender
Eddie Silverbush had a defining performance with a brace including the go-ahead goal in the 74th minute. Senior forward
Luke Raley recorded his eighth goal of the season for the Penguins (3-7-1, 2-3 PacWest). Sophomore goalkeeper
Ruben Raygoza recorded four saves in the win. Noah Mokulehua and Kelton Cheney tallied the goals for the Silverswords (5-3, 3-1 PacWest).
Dominican attacked early in the first half as
Arturo Carrillo Contreras swiftly gained position around his defender beyond midfield and led Silverbush, steaking in from the right sideline. Silverbush spun around a defender in the box and placed a shot within the right goalpost to give the Penguins a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute.
In the 21st minute, Carrillo Contreras attacked the left sideline once more and sent a cross in the box to Raley, but Raley's attempt cleared the crossbar. The Penguins continued to hold the ball in the attacking third and in the 31st minute
Khalil Means sent a chip shot over the defensive backline to Raley in the right corner of the box and Raley netted the shot to extend Dominican's lead to 2-0.
In the 41st minute the Silverswords drew a free kick beyond the box and Reece Hambly rocketed a shot over Raygoza and out of play. The Penguins were able to hold Chaminade scoreless throughout the final minutes, going into the half leading 2-0.
The Silverswords wasted no time in retaliating as Colin Roemer attacked the left sideline and crossed it to Cheney for a left-footed tap to the back of the net to get Chaminade on the board in the 56th minute. Chaminade continued their offensive pressure and in the 61st minute the Silverswords earned a penalty kick after a foul inside the box. Mokulehua took the kick and buried it in the bottom left corner of the box to tie the game, 2-2.
The Penguins had a chance to go ahead in the 71st minute on a free kick beyond the left corner of the box. Raley took the kick, but it was met by Stafford for the save. Dominican capitalized on another attacking opportunity in the 74th minute as
Maxwell Ward sent a shot at goal that was deflected by Stafford, and Silverbush was in position for the put back to give Dominican the 3-2 lead.
With 1:12 remaining in regulation the Silverswords moved into position for one last shot attempt. Hambly sent a shot through traffic at goal from inside the box, and Raygoza made the final save of the match to seal the win for the Penguins.
