Penguins extend winning streak with victory over Sharks

WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – Dominican men's soccer extended its win streak to three games as they defeated Hawai'i Pacific University 2-1 Monday night at Waipio Stadium.

The Penguins (4-7-1, 3-3-0 PacWest) were led by sophomore goalkeeper Ruben Raygoza, who collected five saves on the night, earning his fourth win of the season. Seniors Brendan Adame and Luke Raley each recorded a goal in the Penguin's victory over the sharks.

Gerrit Arzberger collected HPU's only goal of the night on a penalty kick. Goalkeeper Jeremy Zielinski recorded eight saves, but it wasn't enough to slip past Dominican late in the match.

To begin the first half, the Penguins and Sharks (4-4-2, 2-2-1 PacWest) traded shot attempts, but it wasn't until the 29th minute when Arturo Carrillo Contreras chipped a cross to Raley streaming into the box, and Raley quickly tapped it to Adame for the goal to give the Penguins the 1-0 lead.

Seconds after kickoff, Dominican came charging into the Sharks' backfield once more as Eddie Silverbush sent a shot at the bottom right corner of the goal, but Zielinski was there to make the stop. Within a minute to go before the break, the Sharks created an opportunity to tie the games as Jair Espinoza rocketed a shot toward the right goalpost, but Raygoza was in position to make the diving save to sustain Dominican's lead heading into the half.

After trading attempts to open the half, Colin Gunby found a seam in the defense to sneak a shot through traffic toward the upper right corner of the box, but Zielinski was there once more to make the diving grab to keep the Penguins from extending their lead in the 74th minute.

Four minutes later the Sharks earned a corner kick that resulted in a header attempt from Teppei Negami, but Negami missed inches high of the cross bar. HPU quickly regained position and created another offensive attack in the box and Espinoza fired a shot just inside the left goalpost, but Raygoza came through again for the Penguins with another diving save.

In the 83rd minute of play, Silverbush and Raley, who were both named PacWest Players of the Week Monday morning, teamed up on yet another scoring play for the Penguins. Silverbush led Raley inside the box, and Raley connected on the cross for his fourth goal of the road trip, and ninth of the season, extending Dominican's lead to 2-0.

With 2:16 left to go in regulation, HPU fought to make a comeback, and managed to draw a foul inside the box for a penalty kick. Arzberger buried the shot to give the Sharks life late in the game, cutting HPU's deficit to 2-1. Dominican responded by locking down the Sharks throughout the end of regulation to solidify the win.

Dominican will look to extend their winning streak as they return to the Bay Area to face Academy of Art University Sunday at 2:30 p.m. PDT at the City College of San Francisco. Live video and stats will be available online.
