HILO, Hawai'i – Dominican women's soccer ended in a 0-0 draw against the University of Hawai'i at Hilo Wednesday evening at Paiea Stadium.
Senior goalkeeper
Alyssa Ramos earned six saves in yet another shutout recorded this season for the Penguin. Dominican's (3-3-5, 0-2-2 PacWest) defense held the Vulcans to just six shots on goal throughout 110 minutes of play, but the Penguin's offense couldn't catch a break, as the Vulcans contained DU to three shots on goal. Goalkeeper for Hawai'i Hilo, Bailey Cahill, earned her third shutout of the season with the draw.
The Vulcan's (2-4-3, 1-1-1 PacWest) first offensive attack came in the 13
th minute as a corner kick hovered over the box and over the head of Ramos to an empty net, but
Lexi Martinez was there to clear the attempt. A minute later the Vulcans regained possession and Piper Collado sent a shot from beyond the box toward the net. Ramos rushed toward the left goal post to make a diving attempt to save the attack, but luckily for the Penguins, the ball bounced off the goalpost and back into play, where Dominican was able to clear once more.
In the 23
rd minute
Tanya Bills made a move past her defender and found
Katie Bianchi streaming down the right sideline. Bianchi muscled past her defender and sent a shot toward goal but missed high, skimming off the top netting.
A long ball sent to Crystal Sanchez in the 34
th minute led her inside the box for a 1 v. 1 against Ramos. Ramos rushed Sanchez, sliding in to deflect the ball back toward Sanchez. Tangled up with Ramos and
Kayla Kukaua, Sanchez managed to tap the ball toward the empty net, but
Lexi Martinez was there once again to clear the attack.
To begin the second half, Nanea Wall attacked Dominican's third and made her way toward the right corner of the box, forcing yet another 1 v. 1 with Ramos. Ramos rushed Wall to deflect her shot with a diving save. Christina Kanellou followed the shot and lined another attempt at goal, but
Kayla Kukaua was there to head the ball over the cross bar for a defensive save.
Dominican retaliated as they forced their way up field, and
Aiden Marquez found an opening in the defense and sent a shot to the bottom left corner of the goal, but Cahill was there to make the diving grab.
Dominican and Hawai'i Hilo traded attempts throughout the first over time, but neither team was able to capitalize for a go-ahead goal. With seconds remaining, the Vulcans drew a foul beyond the right corner of the box. Kanellou took the free kick and drove it above all players toward goal, but Ramos was there to make the save before the last second ran off the clock.
With over five minutes to go in double overtime,
Tanya Bills made her way around her defender and streamed up field, passing ahead to Bianchi, but Janelle Schwartz came streaming in from inside the box to clear the pass. With three minutes left to go, Dominican earned back-to-back corner kicks in an attempt to knock in the golden goal, but the Penguins could not connect on the attack.
Dominican will look ahead to Saturday as they face Chaminade University of Honolulu at noon HST. Live video and stats will be available online.
