HILO, Hawai'i— Dominican men's soccer overwhelmed the University of Hawai'i at Hilo, as the Penguins earned a 5-1 victory over the Vulcans Wednesday night at Paiea Stadium.
The Penguins were led by goal scorers,
Luke Raley,
Colin Gunby,
Arturo Carrillo Contreras and
Eddie Silverbush. Sophomore goalkeeper
Ruben Raygoza earned three saves in 80:56 minutes of action. Freshman goalkeeper
Alejandro Reyes recorded his first career minutes as a Penguin, subbing in for Raygoza in the 80
thminute and finishing the game with one save, holding the Vulcans scoreless throughout the remainder of the match.
Henrique Castilho netted the Vulcan's lone goal of the night in the 6
th minute. Goalkeeper Michael Harre finished the game with three saves, but it wasn't enough to fend off Dominican's sharp shooters.
The penguins ran to an early lead as Silverbush looked ahead to Raley in the box to send a shot to the back of the net for a 1-0 advantage in the third minute.
Just three minutes later, an attempted slide tackle from
Logan Siemers resulted in a foul and free kick for the Vulcans from beyond the right corner of the box. Castilho took the shot and sent a low liner out of sight from Raygoza and into the left corner of the goal to tie the game, 1-1.
Later in the 15
th minute
Roberto Garcia helped the Penguins march down field, where Carrillo Contreras and Gunby sent two back-to-back shots at Harre, which were both rejected, resulting in a Dominican corner kick. Garcia took the corner, and connected with
Christopher Barrios on a header, which was deflected and sent back to Gunby. Gunby sent the second shot through traffic to the back of the net for a 2-1 lead.
In the 21st minute the Vulcans looked for redemption as Caesar Hjerten raced down the right sideline and sent a shot at goal, but it nicked the heel of another Vulcan in the box and Raygoza was able to slide into position for the save.
The Penguins began the second half on the attack as
Khalil Means connected with Raley in the box for Raley's second goal of the night in the 48
th minute for a 3-1 lead. Later in the 55
th minute, Garcia continued to make plays for Dominican, dancing around his defender and leading Carrillo Contreras into the box for the quick shot and goal to extend Dominican's lead to 4-1.
Later in the 66
th minute, Castilho juked his defender at midfield and streaked toward the goal, passing ahead to Robert George, who played a give-and-go back to Castilho in the box for a quick shot, but Raygoza made the save to fend off the Vulcans.
In the 76
th minute of regulation,
Logan Siemers rushed down the left sideline and sent a cross into the box that slipped past the diving
Kieran Vrklan, and landed at the feet of Silverbush standing near the right goal post to the tap it in, extending Dominican's advantage over the Vulcans to 5-1.
