Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Penguins fall on late goal by Urban Knights

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Dominican Women's soccer controlled the tempo and the momentum for 84 minutes, but fell 1-0 Saturday to Academy of Art on a late goal at Kennelly Field.

The Penguins (2-4-1, 0-1-0 PacWest) had 15 shots with four on goal compared to six shots for the Urban Knights (6-2-0, 1-1-0 PacWest). Junior Yasmine Angel led Dominican with four shots and two on frame, while Alyssa Ramos made three saves.

The Penguins pressured early and often as Lily Dubuc tested Morgan Wirz in the seventh minute and Wirz punched the ball away from her net, but it landed at the foot of Angel. Angel then sent a shot back on frame, but Wirz was able to scramble to her right and get a hand on the ball to keep the match level at 0-0.

Angel again found herself free for a shot in the 13th minute, but Wriz was there once again for Academy of Art to make the save. A ball bounced around inside the Urban Knight box in the 39th minute and found the foot of Kayla Kukaua who chipped a ball toward the empty net, but a defender came to clear the ball off the line for ARTU and the game remained tied at the half.

Dominican again looked like it would take the lead in the 68th minute as Alexis Luna sent a high shot over Wirz and it hit the underside of the cross bar, but it bounced in front of the goal line and the Urban Knights were able to clear it away. Academy of Art created a counter attack in the 84th minute and Jenny Wittor crossed a ball in from the right that found the head of a diving Anissa Wilson for the lone goal of the game.

Dominican will return to action Thursday against Holy Names in Hayward at 7 p.m. PDT at Pioneer Stadium. Live stats and video will be available online.
