Penguins draw with Urban Knights

SAN RAFAEL, Calif, -- Dominican men's soccer was unable to hold off a late Academy of Art charge in a 2-2 draw to open Pacific West Conference play Saturday at Kennelly Field.

In an evenly matched contest, The Penguins (3-2-2, 0-0-1 PacWest) finished with a slim 15-13 advantage in shots and a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal. William Finnie moved to 1-0-2 on the season with three saves, while Kris Jensson made four saves in the net for the Urban Knights (1-4-1, 0-1-1 PacWest)

After an uneventful first half, Brendan Adame sent a corner into the box in the 52nd minute and Colin Gumby was able to rise over a smaller defender and get a piece of it to knock it into the back netting for his first goal of the season and a 1-0 lead. The Penguins continued to put pressure on ARTU and a poor clearance fell to Tanner Herrero near the top of the box and Herrero sent a strike just underneath the crossbar for the 2-0 lead in the 69th minute.

The Urban Knights continued to battle as Edvard Edvarsson sent a low free kick across the face of the goal and Conner Lacey got his foot on it to cut the lead to one with 8:30 left in regulation. ARTU drew another penalty in the 85th minute and Edvarsson again put the free kick into the box to the head of Conner Henrichs for the tying goal.

The intensity in the first overtime was high as both teams sought the golden goal. Diego Vasquez had a solid attempt for the Penguins in the 94th minute as he sent a curling ball toward the net, but Urban Knight goalie Kris Jensson made a diving save to keep the score at 2-2.

The Penguins will head across the bay to take on Holy Names at the Pioneer Stadium in Hayward at 4:30 p.m. PDT Thursday. Live stats and video will be available online.
