HAYWARD, Calif. – Dominican's Men's Soccer Team fell 2-0 to Holy Names Thursday evening at Pioneer Field with a set piece making the difference.
The Penguins' (3-3-2, 0-1-1 PacWest) offense was powered by forward
Wilson Briggs who finished with six total shots.
Cole Henderson and
Diego Vasquez also accounted for two shot attempts each, but none were able to find the back netting.
Holy Names' Mariano Alatorre led the Hawks with three out of four attempts on goal, finding the back of the net in the first half.
A Holy Names yellow card in the 13th minute granted Dominican a free kick and the Penguins maintained possession in their attacking third, attempting a shot and pair of corner kicks within one minute. In the 17th minute, Edgar Solis sent a corner into the box to Alatorre and Alatorre found the corner of the net for his second goal of the season to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
Eddie Silverbush met a corner kick taken by
Diego Vasquez in the back left-hand corner of the box, but was unable to find the equalizer in the 35th minute.
The Penguins came out strong in the second half in an attempt even the score.
Wilson Briggs' accounted for five of Dominican's seven attempts within the first 15 minutes of the second half, but was unable to find the back of the net. Briggs had chances in the 63rd and 67th minute that would level the game, but both times a Hawk defender was able to clear the ball before it crossed the goal line. With under three minutes to go in the second half, HNU's Josiah Romero gave the Hawks some insurance with an unassisted goal.
