ARCATA, Calif. – Dominican men's soccer rallied from an early deficit for a 2-1 victory Saturday over Humboldt State at College Creek Field.
The Penguins' (1-1-0) victory was their first ever over the Jacks (1-1) since joining the NCAA Division II in 2009. Freshman
Ruben Raygoza earned the victory in his first start in goal for Dominican after making five saves.
Francisco Calderon opened the scoring for Humboldt State after Gus Baxter found him behind the defense and Calderon beat the keeper on the ground for the 1-0 lead in the 15th minute. Dominican fought back and
Brendan Adame sent a cross to the right side of the goal to a waiting
Luke Raley for the tie in the 25th minute.
Raygoza denied a shot by Ethan Waters in the 31st minute as the teams entered the half in a 1-1 tie. The Penguins went on attack early in the second as
Matt Albert took a header off a free kick in the 47th minute which hit the crossbar, but he collected the rebound and sent it home for the 2-0 lead.
The defense took over from there as the backline combined for two team saves and Raygoza added four of his own to secure the victory.
Dominican will return home to host Pacific Union Wednesday at 4 p.m. PDT at Kennelly Field. Live stats and video will be available online.
